HAWTHORNE STUDENTS ENJOY BIBLICAL FIELD TRIP
Hawthorne students were able to visit the people and
places at the time of Jesus. In this photo,
the children were able to see a recreation of the
empty tomb.
Mrs.
Hickson’s class at Hawthorne Christian Academy recently enjoyed
a Biblical field trip at Narroway
Productions in Fort Mill. The hour long program allowed
students to step back in time to an
ancient world in an inspiring search
for Jesus. Live animals and hands-on
fun made this field trip both
educational and entertaining. The
students were able to meet Firecracker the Donkey, Sheba the Camel,
and Biblical characters from the
New Testament. The production featured special effects, dramatic
lighting and sound, and authentic costumes
that brought the locations of the Holy Land to life.
MISSIONS WEEK AT HAWTHORNE
Hawthorne Christian Academy held it's first
annual Mission's Week, which was a series of special services,
activities and classroom lessons discussing the work of
missionaries around the world. Hawthorne was honored this year
to have missionaries Tim and Kristi Johnson and Brian Baker to
speak to the students, faculty and staff about their work on the
mission field.
On Wednesday, February 22nd, Tim and Kristi
Johnson shared stories about their ministry in Alpedrete, Spain.
They shared how 30 million people in Spain do not have Bible
believing churches in their communities, and how they are
reaching out to share the gospel. At the conclusion of the
service, Hawthorne presented the Johnson's with a check for $175
to help further their ministry. This money was raised by the
students, faculty, and staff from previous chapel offerings.
After the presentation, the students had lunch which included
some ethnic favorites: Spanish rice and flan. The Johnson's are
missionaries with the Free Will Baptist International Missions.
For further information about their work please visit their
website at:
http://www.fwbgo.com/missionaries/johnson/
On Thursday, February 23rd, Brian Baker
described his missionary work in the former Soviet Union in the
early 1990's. He then described the changes he had witnessed
when he and his wife Shannon went back two years ago to Russia.
One of the memorable moments of his experience was when he was
able to hand out Christian tracts to people at Lenin's tomb.
Lenin had tried during his time as leader to remove God from the
Soviet Union. Mr. Baker then closed with a challenge that we are
all missionaries, and that God doesn't need our ability, He
needs our availability. In addition to the presentation, the
Bakers had pictures of their missionary experiences and several
Russian matryoshka "nesting" dolls for the children to examine.
These chapel services were wonderful
opportunities for the students, faculty and staff to learn about
the work of missionaries and the challenge of the "Great
Commission".

BASKETBALL PLAYOFFS UPDATE
Hawthorne Christian Academy’s Varsity Boys
Basketball Team competed last week in the South Carolina
Association of Christian Schools Playoffs. The Varsity Boys made
the playoffs for the first time in school history and
won on the road in the first round against
Mountain View Christian Academy of Cowpens, SC. The Hawks then
advanced to the quarterfinals and lost to Walnut Grove Christian
School of Fort Mill. Walnut Grove went on to win the SCACS State
Championship. The progress the Varsity Boys have made over the
last few years is a tribute to the teams hard work and Coach
Jeff Cok.
The Junior Varsity Boys won their opening
round game of the SCACS JV playoffs on Tuesday, February 20th versus Heritage Christian
School of Gaffney by a score of 77 to 48. The Hawks had a great
game against a strong Heritage team that kept it close until
halftime. The Hawks then came out in the second half and
outscored the Hornets by 22 points. The Hawks advanced to play
Friday, February 24th in the quarterfinals against Abundant
Life. In a game that had several lead changes, the Hawks played
well, but not good enough to overcome Abundant Life's deep
bench. The Hawks lost 53 to 41, which ended a great season for
the JV team.

3...2...1... Liftoff!
Mr. Cassady’s science class at Hawthorne
Christian Academy recently studied space exploration and the history
of rocketry. The students learned about rocket design, the history
of NASA, and the space race. At the end of program the students
built their own model rocket and launched them. They also tracked
their rockets and calculated the maximum altitude that each flight
reached. The highest rocket reached over 1,000 feet. Listed below is
a You Tube video showing some of the student's launches.
Hawthorne Christian Academy recently performed a
Christmas play entitled “The Miracle On Main Street”. The musical
featured thirteen songs and had a cast and choir of over 50
students. The engaging script had an upbeat blend of new songs with
traditional carols that chronicle the dilemma of a group of children
who want to celebrate Christmas in public, but face opposition from
the politically correct local townsfolk. Despite the challenges, the
children stand up for their beliefs and joyfully proclaim their
faith. Mrs. Becky Hickson directed the play and many of HCA’s
faculty and staff participated in the production. Hawthorne
Christian Academy is a preschool through 12th grade school and is a
ministry of First Free Will Baptist Church.
Several high school students from Hawthorne
Christian Academy recently attended a Christian College Fair held at
Grace Christian School in West Columbia, SC. Several hundred
students from across South Carolina attended the fair where twelve
Christian colleges and universities gave presentations about their
respective schools. The informational sessions gave the students the
ability to learn about the different programs, student life, and
financial aid of each of these institutions. The Christian College
Fair is one of several higher education related visits that
Hawthorne students have participated in this year.
Hawthorne Students Research and Build Native American

The students in Mrs. Becky Hickson’s 4th grade
class at Hawthorne Christian Academy have been studying and
researching Native American dwellings. Each student got to create
their own dwelling. The students made a Hogan, a Pueblo dwelling, a
Sioux tepee, and a lodge made of earth and wood. The students also
did research on the structures and wrote a paper on the dwelling
they built.

Christian Academy of Cowpens in the semi-finals. In the consolation
game, Hawthorne defeated Heritage Christian of Gaffney to win third

as an All Tournament Player.

The Herbert and Anna Lutz Foundation of Chester
recently donated funds to Hawthorne Christian Academy for a new
computer lab and interactive whiteboard technology. The grant
purchased 11 new Dell PC’s, a high definition LCD projector, and the
Mimio Teach interactive whiteboard. The new computer lab will give
students the ability to learn the latest software and interactively
teach complex concepts in science and math. Without the support of
the Lutz Foundation, Hawthorne Christian Academy would not have been
able to offer this state-of-the-art technology to their students.
The faculty and staff of Hawthorne Christian Academy recently attended
the 42nd Annual South Carolina Association of Christian Schools (SCACS)
Teachers Convention which was held at the Marriott Convention Center in
Spartanburg, SC. The two day event featured over 100 seminars, exhibits,
and general sessions. Approximately 500 teachers and administrators from
90 Christian Schools across South Carolina attended the convention. Some
of the session topics offered training in the latest educational
technology, implementing a hands on learning experience, assisting
students with special needs, integrating music and arts in the
classroom, and developing students into leaders with a Christian
worldview. Hawthorne is a member of SCACS and is celebrating 10 years of
Christian education in Chester County.
